Blue Star Dairy Farms has been family owned and operated for several generations. The farm was first established by William and Dorothy Meinholz, who sold the farm to the next two generations. Currently, Blue Star Dairy Farms is a family partnership between two brothers, Louie (Joanne) and Art (Lori) Meinholz, along with two of Louie’s sons, Craig (Sherri) and Brian (Rhonda).
Blue Star Dairy Farms has three locations and milks around 2,600 cows. The original dairy in Middleton milks 600 cows.
The DeForest farm milks 800 cows and the Arlington farm milks 1,200 cows.
Cows are milked three times a day in Germania herringbone style parlors. The Middleton farm is a double 12 parlor, DeForest is a double 16, and Arlington is a double 18 parlor. The DeForest and Arlington parlors are equipped with AfiMilk Weighing System which monitors each cows daily milk weights, activity, and conductivity, along with numerous other functions. The average production per cow is 90 lbs of milk per day and a somatic cell count of 130,000.
The Middleton and DeForest farms raise all of their own replacement young stock. Calving and raising of young stock for the Arlington dairy is done at the DeForest farm, as well as housing of all the dry cows. All cows are housed in free stall barns with sand bedded stalls. The heifer calves are housed in naturally ventilated calf barns until they are moved to open front bedding pack barns at 2-3 months of age. The remaining heifers are in free stall barns until entering the cow herd.
Blue Star Dairy Farms operates on 4,500 acres, with another 1,500 acres of feed purchased from neighbors to meet our needs. All cropping is based out of our DeForest farm. Blue Star Dairy Farms currently employs 65 total employees, many of which are family members.
